Seven lenders.
One ad.

92 personal loan ads from seven New Zealand lenders and brokers, read in full and set against Eugene Schwartz's Breakthrough Advertising.

Almost every personal loan ad on Meta makes the same three promises: a rate "from", a fast answer, and an amount. The lenders are now out-bidding each other on those numbers by fractions. Three of them have found something else to say, and each of the three says something different. Nobody is showing what a loan costs or what a customer ended up with.

The numbers war

Each lender's headline numbers, side by side. This is what Schwartz calls a market's second stage: the first claim worked, so everyone repeats it a little bigger.

The gaps are now tiny. 8.99% became 8.95% in Three Pillars' newest ads. A response in "1 to 2 hours" is being beaten by "1 business hour". A 3-minute form is up against a 2-minute one. A reader cannot feel the difference between these, which is the point at which Schwartz says enlarging the claim stops working.

Need $10,000, $20,000, or even $30,000? Get a personal loan that works for you, with fast approvals, competitive rates from 8.99%, and a 2-minute application.

What they are really selling

Under the numbers, two reasons to borrow.

Money for something you want

A third of the ads name an occasion. The same handful comes up at every lender: a holiday (Better, Three Pillars, Loan Direct), a wedding (MTF, Three Pillars, Loan Direct), a renovation or home project (Three Pillars, MTF, Instant Finance), a car (Westpac). MTF gives its occasions the most character.

Being by your bestie's side on her big day is a bit of a non-negotiable. Book the flights. Buy the dress. Bring the vibes.

Relief from repayments you already have

Debt consolidation is in 16% of ads and five of the seven lenders run it. The promise is always "one repayment". Not one of these ads shows the before and after: what the repayments were, what they became, what it cost. Better's own small print says "Consolidation may not reduce the total cost of borrowing".

Three lenders saying something different

Loan Direct argues against the category's own promise

Everyone else sells speed. Loan Direct's newest ads warn against it, and turn "we compare 11 lenders" from a tick in a list into the headline. It is the only lender attacking an alternative, and the only one telling people who already have a loan to check whether they are overpaying.

Don't get a loan. Get an adviser-led loan. A loan gives you money. An adviser helps you make sense of the options.

Loan Direct · running 16 days

Needing money quickly shouldn't push you towards a high-cost loan. Fast doesn't have to mean rushed.

Also: "Start your life together with a celebration, not a financial hangover" and "Loans should not be set and forget".

Instant Finance talks to the people the others turn away

Two ads in the whole category mention bad credit, and both are Instant Finance. It also runs the smallest offer (a $500 loan at 0% for three months, with a $95 fee), a sense of humour, and physical branches. Its ads are the most repeated in the set: single creatives appear 23, 17 and 16 times, six months in.

Some lenders say no faster than you can say "credit score". At Instant Finance we take the time to understand your story.

MTF sells the person down the road

"Your local money experts." "In your corner, around the corner." No rate anywhere, only "same day approval". It also has the only customer story in the category: a named couple and a named lender.

When you can't wait, we won't either. This couple needed things moving fast, so Dan from MTF Finance Rolleston got to work.

Better is the only one showing its working

Better is in the numbers war too, but it prices the loan the way a borrower thinks ("$10,000 from $68 a week"), prints the total repayable, promises no impact on your credit score, and carries the only outside proof in the category: 4.9 out of 5 on Trustpilot and 65,000 Kiwis helped.

What nobody is saying

Five things missing from all 92 ads, or said by one lender only.

  1. What a typical borrower actually pays. Every rate is "from". Only Better's small print admits the range runs to 29.95%. No ad leads with the real cost of a real loan.
  2. How the decision gets made. What gets a yes, what gets a no, what happens to your credit file. Fourteen ads mention credit score at all.
  3. A result. One customer story, one review score. No consolidation ad shows repayments before and after.
  4. The fear of being declined. Left entirely to Instant Finance.
  5. A mechanism of your own. "One application, many lenders" is shared by Better and Loan Direct. Nobody else names how they do what they promise.

What Schwartz would do

His rule for a market where every claim has been made and enlarged: stop enlarging. Bring in a new mechanism and put it in the headline, so the old promise becomes believable again. When mechanisms run out as well, sell identification: who the reader is, not what they get.

Personal loans on Meta sit right at that turn. The claims are spent. Loan Direct has made the first mechanism move. Instant Finance and MTF have gone straight to identification ("Makers of Possible", "Local like you"). The four lenders still competing on rate and minutes are the ones with the least to say.

Openings: lead with the true cost of one real loan, start to finish. Show a consolidation with the numbers before and after. Explain how a decision is made, to the borrower who expects a no. Each of these is a claim a reader can believe on sight, and no lender here is making it.
